a literary adventurer
The daughter of diplomats, I grew up in Canada, the United States during the McCarthy era, in Generalissimo Franco’s fascist Spain, in England and in communist Czechoslovakia. The French and British schools I went to could have come out of a Charles Dickens novel. My teenage years were spent behind the Iron Curtain.
These experiences gave me a passion for history, and the insights behind my life as a creative writer. All three of my novels, my non-fiction history, and the plays and short stories I have had published explore historical incidents and the effects they have had on the way we live and love today.
When I am not writing on the edge of a forest in rural Canada, or in a mountainside village in Crete, or in a Prague cafe, I am exploring history’s awesome powers of love and destruction.
